A conversation with Dipesh Chakrabarty (part 2)

Dipesh Chakrabarty is the Lawrence A. Kimpton Distinguished Service Professor of History, South Asian Languages and Civilizations, and Law at the University of Chicago. He is a founding member of the editorial collective of Subaltern Studies, a founding editor of Postcolonial Studies, and is a Consulting Editor of Critical Inquiry. His current projects are on the implications of the science of climate change for historical and political thinking, democracy and political thought in South Asia and a cultural history of Muslim-Bengali nationalism. He is the author of many articles and books including "Provincializing Europe: Postcolonial Thought and Historical Difference" published in 2000 and "The Climate of History: Four Theses" published in 2009. Currently, Chakrabar is working on a book on climate change and a collection of essays on history’s relationship to the present.

Gamut Inc. – musical robots

gamut inc was founded 2011 by Marion Wörle and Maciej Sledziecki to explore the interaction of electronic and instrumental music. The interdisciplinary ensemble consists of a growing number of autonomous music robots, which are controlled from computer. Our focus lies in sonic textures - for that purpose we developed specialized software to control these machines live. Further on we use different forms of live-generated music scores to enable different degrees of composition and live improvisation between the machines, electronic sounds and "real" musicians, with whom we like to collaborate. Our recent projects include for example the machine-music festival WIR SIND DIE ROBOTER in Berlin, the music-theatre piece ONE MORE PIONEER, about the relationship between human and technology, or the international festival AVANT AVANTGARDE, a travel in time to experimental music before the 20th century.

Unter backing track versteht man gemeinhin ein unvollständiges Musikstück, dessen Produktion im Hinblick auf eine zukünftige Ergänzung erfolgte und somit ein Zusammenspiel einfordert. Basierend auf dieser Technik wird eine eigentlich abgeschlossene Musikaufnahme aus dem Jahr 1917 gehört. Dieses auf Schellack konservierte Lied, aufgenommen im sogenannten Griechenlager in Görlitz, wird fortan zu einer Begleitung. Unter Zuhilfenahme eines Musik- sowie eines Finanzinstruments produzieren wir weitere Spuren, in denen Fragen nach dem Verhältnis von vermeintlich getrennten Sphären wie Musik und Ökonomie anklingen. Am Ende dieses Prozesses verleiht eine einhundert Jahre alte Tonaufnahme dem Begriff "historische Aufführungspraxis" eine gänzlich neue Bedeutung.
Backing track bildet den dritten und letzten Teil einer im Jahr 2012 begonnenen Trilogie namens common cents, die sich mit den Möglichkeiten der Artikulation einer Krise beschäftigt.
Das Radiostück basiert auf einer Performance, die am 29. April 2017 im Rahmen des "Parliament of Bodies” in der Rotunde des Fridericianums in Kassel stattfand.

Das Klangspektrum von Glocken definiert Hoheitsgebiete und trennt die eine Gemeinschaft von der anderen entlang kultureller, religiöser oder ideologischer Bruchlinien. Glocken verbinden auch Menschen. Wenn sie mit großer Sorgfalt gestimmt werden, ist ihre Tonreinheit und Klangfülle Anlass für gemeinsamen Stolz. Umgekehrt hat der Raub von Glocken – meist im Zuge kriegerischer Handlungen – die erbittertsten Feindschaften nach sich gezogen. 2015 unternahm der Komponist und Künstler Samson Young eine Reise um die Welt, um historische Glocken aufzusuchen und aufzunehmen, die Vorstellungen politischer, rassischer, ideologischer, religiöser und zwischenmenschlicher Gegensätze konkretisiert haben. Darunter sind Warnglocken für die Sklavenhändler von Mombasa, Kenia; eine von den Nazis im polnischen Bydgoszcz konfiszierte Glocke, die nach dem Krieg auf langen Umwegen zurück in die Stadt fand; die große Pfauenuhr in der St. Petersburger Eremitage, eine Liebesgabe des Grafen Potemkin für Katharina die Große; sowie eine "zum Schweigen gebrachte" Kirchenglocke aus Spanien, die als Lüster nunmehr stumm von der Decke der Al-Qarawiyyin-Moschee in Fez, Marokko, hängt. Such Sweet Thunder ist eine einstündige Komposition, die diese Glockenklänge zu einem dichten Teppich widerstreitender Obertöne und Dissonanzen verwebt.

Several times a day, randomly, a specific SAVVY Funk selection of the ultrashort radio art format "Wurfsendung” of Deutschlandfunk Kultur is broadcast.

"SAVVY Funk" von documenta 14 und Deutschlandfunk Kultur ist Teil des Radioprogramms "Every Time A Ear Di Soun". Es umfasst unter anderem 32 Auftragswerke, die seit dem 8. April durch acht internationale Radiosender zirkulieren. Die deutsche Station "SAVVY Funk" ist ein dreiwöchiges Radioprogramm, das täglich und rund um die Uhr neu von Künstler_innen gestaltet wird, deren Arbeit im Ausstellungsraum des SAVVY Contemporary öffentlich zugänglich ist.

Die teilnehmenden Künstler_innen arbeiten bei der Entwicklung und Durchführung des Radioprogramms mit Student_innen der Professur für Experimentelles Radio an der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar zusammen.
